Week-end work and a few follow-ups

Ugh. 8h36, and I can't sleep anymore because best Friend's freaking alarm clock spent the better part of the last hour shrieking in his ear. Of course, he never wakes up to it, though it's probably woken up the rest of the borough by now. Gr. And of course I only got to bed around 1h00 *and* I'm supposed to start a new job at noon, so I was hoping to be at my best to-day... Christ on a biscuit, man. I finally got up, stomped into his room, and hit the off button. *That* woke him up [looks sufferingly heavenward].

In other news. I tend to disrespect PETA in a big way. I find that they concentrate far too much on the mediagenic acts rather than actually answering the issues of a dying planet, as evidenced by their stance on pleather and stuff like that (you've all heard me go on. It's a pet peeve), but once in a while, they can be used to some actual benefit:

Subject: Kitten on grill response

'Thank you for contacting us about this hideous case. We are sending a letter to the Clay County prosecutor, and urge you and your friends to do the same. Please request that in addition to a period of incarceration, this guy undergo a mandatory psychological evaluation and necessary counseling at his own expense. Insist that he be prohibited from owning or harboring animals in the future, all contact with animals, and that any animals currently in his custody be immediately seized. Polite letters should go to:

The Honorable Don Norris
Clay County Prosecutor
Clay County Prosecutors Office
11 S. Water
Liberty, MO 64068
Fax: 816-792-7684

'By sending copies of your prosecutor letter to your local media outlets you help ensure that this story continues to be covered, and stays alive in peoples minds.

'You may also wish to send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, expressing your outrage and conveying how important it is to take these crimes seriously. Point out that studies have shown, and both law enforcement officials and top medical professionals agree, people who abuse animals invariably go on to abuse people. These criminals pose a risk not just to animals, but to the community at large. See http://www.peta-online.org/mc/facts/fsc24.html.

Thank you for your concern and compassion.

Sincerely,
Martin Mersereau, Cruelty Caseworker
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.'

I'm pretty sure you all know what to do.

In other news, it sure seems that military brass are the same as corporate whores and politicians everywhere: it's all about saving your own arse.

I am a proponent of free-range flesh and organic food. I see the support of the free-range chicken and meat industries as a way of ensuring their survival and making them a big enough concern as to get some serious standards going. And for every Seitan-addled vegan who whinges that I'm not doing enough to saisfy her self-righteous extremism, there's another person like me, who knows that simply running to veganism and leaving our natural foodsources to those who don't give a rat's arse is the wrong answer. As more people turn to 'fairer' farms for our produce, they'll come under more and more public scrutiny and have to become actual 'fair' farms, because in that area, consumers still run the way stuff is done. Coca-Cola Inc. doesn't have to care; your local organic butcher certainly does.

And we desperately need organic farming to become more widespread, both to save the ground in which the crops grow and to help the market reach the saturation point at which the prices come down. If organic carrots or free-range meat is too expensive for those of us who *aren't* having everything paid-for by our parents, then what's the use?

Dunno. This got me thinking...

Anyway, I must go and get ready for [shudder] work...
