The unimportance of being Canadian

Hm. There's a possibility that we're going to get a new stat holiday here in the Great White North. The Dominion Institute wants to implement a holiday to honour dead Canadian Prime Ministers.

What a ridiculous idea.

It is my opinion that holidays in honour of national figures are for Heads of State, *not* Heads of Government, and we have a holiday commemorating a former Head of State: Victoria Day. If we feel the need to commemorate political or national figures who *lived* in Canada, then the Governors-General, who are the defacto Heads of State, are the logical choice. But elevating the Prime Minister to some sort of hallowed status is to deny the main characteristic of the Prime Minister's position: that of being first among equals. That is the reason the PM sits among his ministers and party members in the House of Commons, that is the reason he slugs it out in the House with the rest of Parliament, as opposed to being some ridiculous separate entity like in a presidency. Leave all of that to Presidents and Viceroys, as that's what they're *for.*

I know: The idea behind Dead Prime Ministers' Day would be to honour a different PM every year, Like Borden (one of CF's heroes [embarassed giggle]), who used Canada's involvement in WWI to forge the Dominion into a sovereign nation, and briefly made Canada an influential country in the affairs of the UK and the still small and untried USA, which really wouldn't begin to mean anything *huge* until the end of the Second World War. I understand all of that. Yadda. What will we honour when it's Brian Mulroney's turn? His utter reversal of borden's hard work? His tireless efforts to make us a lapdog nation again? What do we do when it's Trudeau's turn? He's equally loved and loathed in the country he helped (briefly) make cool and irreverent.

What a mess.

In typical Canadian fashion, I think the idea stinks, but I still voted 'yes.'
