Cat

There was a cat hunkered down in a doorway. Cats are cute, so I went over to pet it. I should have known something was up when it didn't even look up at me until I was reaching out towards it, but it noticed me and hissed the most powerless little hiss I'd ever heard.

And left a few spots of blood on the step beside it. It was bleeding heavily at the mouth. I know the cat won't be around when I go home to-night. I knew also that there wasn't a goddamned thing I could do for the little guy, so I just stood there and looked into its eyes for a minute and wished that, for a second or two, I could have been a saviour.
