BRIAN MASSE CONDEMNS RACIAL PROFILING AT U.S. BORDER

OTTAWA - New Democrat MP Brian Masse this week called on Prime Minister Jean Chrtien to intervene with U.S. President George W. Bush to put an end to the racial profiling of Canadian citizens at the U.S border.

He told the Commons, in recent months, Canadians with dual nationality have been subjected to delays of two hours or more in order to register under the American National Security Entry Exit Registration System (NSEERS).

Canadian citizens traveling to the United States with a Canadian passport are being subjected to racial profiling, the MP for Windsor West said. Any Canadian who carries a valid passport should not have to be subject to such treatment.

The NSEERS program requires individuals who are, or suspected of being nationals or citizens of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan or Syria, to be interviewed, fingerprinted and photographed on entry to the United States and again on leaving the country.

At an international conference on security and intelligence last month, RCMP Commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli was quoted as saying racial profiling is clearly unacceptable behaviour that is contrary to our Charter, contrary to our operational policy, and contrary to our values.
