A Rant and a half

After reading this article sent me by Luv, it seems to me that the US should be under the guns for some serious human rights violations *and* censured for blatant acts of institutionalised racism. It also seems that the country's eating itself and becoming just another police state where the words 'freedom' and 'democracy' are little more than tools for an already overdriven propaganda machine. The treatment of these inmates matches exactly the issues that have the US up in arms about the human rights abuse in Cuban or Chinese gaols -- both, strangely, non-white nations.

It's also just another piece to the new world order being brought into being by post 911 Washington. And order where the US has the gall to use it's place on the UN security council to order the UN to take the teeth out of the War Crime Tribunal, which begins work on 1 July. The US delegation wants US citizens to be exempt from prosecution at the Tribunal, or they'll start vetoing peacekeeper missions, starting with the Bosnia renewal.

Not only is this an utter insult to Canada, which started the work to create the peacekeeper programme in the first place (and has sent out more Blue Berets than any other nation), but it's also counter to the spirit of the UN.

If China had used their security council veto to put their national interests over the world community's, Bush would have been leading the charge to lay accusations on them.

In abusing its leadership role in such a bald and crass manner, the US has proven that it no longer deserves its permanent spot on the Security council. Henll, those permanent spots are a relic from a dead Cold War anyway, and should be abolished. They are an anti-democratic element in what is supposed to be a democratic organisation.

It is also clear that the UN should not be in New York City. the home-team attitude of the American delegation shows this in bright, flashing lights, and the even more imperialist way the US is dealing with the world these days tells me that they should not be in a position to have that much influence over the international community.

I now know for a fact that the citizens of the US are not unanimously sheeplike in their acceptance of the Big Brotherisation of their country, and this fills me with hope. I just hope that the world can shake itself loose as well.
