What a mess

Hm. Interesting little points that came out of an early-ish phonecall with the Origamist this morning: the Alliance Party recently had a leadership convention in which they ousted the charismatic but ridiculous Stockwell Day; Alexa McDonouogh's resignation as leader of the NDP has sparked a leadership race within that party; Joe Clark's leadership of the Progressive Conservatives is up for review; and it looks like the Liberals are about to go into a race as well -- a race between Jean Chretien and Paul Martin, which promises to be ugly as sin, with not only the leadership of the Liberals, but also the prime ministership as the prize.

This means two things: First, it's very possible that very soon, Gilles Duceppe will be the only party leader in federal politics with more than six months at the job under his belt (which will be ridiculous), and because one of the incumbent in the Liberal party's leadership race happens to be the prime minister, this is the only way Canadians will be able to vote for their next PM. Oh, and since I am a card- carrying member of a political party other than the Liberals, I am not eligible to vote.

Hm. canada was already in about a tonne of trouble because the ruling party is beset by charges of corruption, demonstrations, polls stating that half of Canadians don't trust them as far as they can toss the lot, and rebellions by backbenchers and assorted party members during votes; but there is literally *no* other federal party with the wherewithal to take them on. Now, it seems that the mess is about to become even worse. I'd like to move to Denmark, please.
