Good-bye, Queen Mum

I'm a little sad to-day. Canada and most of the Commonwealth has their flags at half-mast because our favourite Royal is dead. Here, the papers all have special 12-page segments or long, drawn-out commemorations of the Queen Mum, but I haven't bought any. I never thought she *could* die. I mean, this was the woman who terrified Hitler more than any of her regiments or her husbands ever could. She loved her people across the Empire and loathed Jimmy Carter, she invented the Royal walkabout while on the Cross-Canada tour that she said made her and the King, she worked tirelessly as patron of several zillion charities and organisations, only stopping long enough to tell us again that our good deed are the rent we pay for our station in life. She refused to allow her family to be re-located to Canada when it looked like the Germans were actually going to win, and refused to forgive that Simpson girl for causing an abdication and forcing the Monarchy on her and her husband, yet when it became clear that they could not avoid the job, she took on the role of King's consort with flair and style. She was the first Monarch to smile in public, and the last actual Empress on the planet ( in terms of having an empire, not in terms of Japan). She was the colonel-in-chief of three Canadian regiments, and Companion of the Order of Canada.

Oh, she also got into trouble for calling her then-fianc 'Bertie' during the only interview she ever gave, waaay back in 1923. Her father was not amused.

She believed that the Royal Family had a covenant with the people in their empire, and later their Commonwealth, and that the Monarch must be in touch with his or her subjects. She instilled in her brood a similar sense, sending them all off to join foundations or charities of some sort.

She was also cute as a button and loveable in a fuzzy, yet standoffish, way.

Agh. What a sad occurence. I guess I can pretty well sum things up with a quote from Her Excellency, the Governor-General:

'The death of The Queen Mother marks the end of an era. We offer, at this time, our deepest sympathy to Her Majesty The Queen and to the Royal Family. We join in sorrow our friends throughout the Commonwealth who, like us, will miss The Queen Mother and all that her extraordinary character added to this century and the last.'
