Immigration woes.

The Canadian government, under the current administration, has developed into an overly harsh entity, quite different from that which held our doors open to refugees from all over the world. In the wake of September 11, Citizenship and Immigration Canada has changed the immigration requirements, retroactively affecting 500,000 current applicants in mid-stream *even though* the Immigration handbook states that any changes made to the system should not affect current applicants.

Many of those who applied under the old rules will now not be allowed into the country, nor will they get any refund of their $500 aplication fee.

$500 is peanuts to many US citizens or British immigrants, but those coming from poorer regions may be ruined by this.

Similarly, an aged Aussie woman who came to Canada for a short vacation has applied to stay in Fredericton for humanitarian reasons (her flight there from Australia triggered a blood-clotting disorder that makes it potentially fatal to take long flights). She and her daughter are being deported. To different countries.

You see, the moter has Irish citizenship, and can better make the flight to Ireland. There is, however, no proof forthcoming from the Irish government that they wouldn't deport the daughter right back to Canada on arrival, as she does *not* have Irish citizenship. Ergo, Her Majesty's Canadian government has seen fit to deport the daughter back to Australia.

Hm. I guess no-one in the Canadian bureaucracy has an aged and sick mother.
