Isaac vs. Ismael

I am flabbergasted. I'm glad to see that Canada signed a declaration condemning Israel's treatment of Palestinians because I think it's time that the West told the Israeli government that we don't buy the crap they spew, and that their policies vis-a-vis the displaced Palestinians are driven by nothing greater than utter predjudice.

But I'm disgusted that that same declaration didn't take the Palestinial Authority to task for not doing more to kerb its people's violence. I'd say it's obvious that the Israeli government is not the only agitator here, and the fact that our government put its John Hancock on a unilateral declaration like that is disturbing. Absolutely disturbing. Maybe a little discussion is in order over in the middle east? Perhaps a ceasefire that sticks? Look, it's obvious that neither side really wants to end anything because they're just to used to hating one another and all the related stupidity, but come *on*.

It certainly seems as though neither side in that conflict can be trusted to take a leading role in any sort of preace process, therefore I have two possible West-enforced solutions:

1) Tally up all of Israel's weapons, and all of those held by Palestinians. Make sure both sides have the exact same stuff and training, then let them slaughter one another fairly -- with a proviso that anyone setting foot or sights outside the borders of Israel will get a MEGA smackdown by the UN, as will any surrounding nation that tries to take advantage of the situation to attack Israel; we wouldn't want Syria sneaking in an invasion any more than we'd want Israel re-taking parts of Lebanon in the name of national security. This is an ugly but effective solution. Needlessly violent, though.

2) Send in an international force, depose both governments, and declare martial law. Replace the upper echelons of both societies with hand-picked people who are pledged to peace at any cost, make them share the country fair and square, and begin an aggressive brainwashing programme in schools to make Israeli and Palestinian kids adore each other. Anyone who naysays or dissents would be placed in prison as a political agitator. Also ugly, but equally effective. Oh, and we in the West *like* doing to other countries what we'd hate to have done to us...

Any other ideas? Maybe we can then save the world, cure hunger, end poverty, and put a leash on the US Army...
