Cosmos

Flickering screen. Outside, Montral nuzzles itself and tries to stay warm. It's 0 degrees and dark out. the sky is so clear I can see the footprints on the Sea of Tranquility and the swing of the stars out there, moving at incredible speeds as galaxies twirl and move away from the centre of the universe. Expand, expand, universe; you will shrink again in due time.

Down here, nothing moves as fast. distances are measured in kilometres and millimetres, time is measured in minutes. History moves in months and years.

A galactic year is 225 million earth years.

The UK and US will bully a third world country, create the same problem (in Pakistan this time, for sure) lose thousands of their own people at home due to biological warfare; governments in the East will fall because they stand opposite their populations. Wars will come and go, North America's maps will change as Canada loses its sovereignty and the US is eventually destabilised by the constant erosion of human rights within its borders. China will become a superpower and fill the void left by the decline of the West, and the world will change. Races will eat each other and species will die out. Global warming will continue unchecked and flood Vancouver and the Netherlands with water shed by the poles.

All in a cosmic second.

I have clear, vivid memories of the Cold War. Not everyone these days does. I knew we were all going to be put under by Russkie missiles, even as they got put under by Yankee ones. Over the world, you could tell whose terrorists were US funded versus who were backed by the USSR. You just had to count M-16s versus AK-47s.

Ideologies. Nowadays, warfare is no longer for land. The west keeps the oil flowing to America, the East rages against foreign influence, we go to war over culture.

Less than a cosmic second.

If there is no one else out there somewhere, that's a breath-taking waste. If anyone else out there has killed themselves off the way we will, that's a waste too.

Species flare up and peter out in a cosmic second. Events that seem cataclysmic here on our lonely little outpost of life must seem like the destruction of an anthill when thrown up against the canvas of the Universe.
