Nothing really, just an early-morning rant

You know, we're sitting here, more than halfway through the first year of the twenty-first century, and I've got some questions?

What happened to the miraculous appearance of flying cars, pollution-free energy, ships to the stars, and for Mike's sakes, where's the boundless world peace I was promised?

The world was 13 years into the last century before they fell into a war that nobody wanted. WWI occured because international treaties and agreements had become so entangled that when a Serb fired a gun at the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, there was no way for anyone to stay out of it.

The last century's corpse isn't even cold yet, and we're already doing the *exact* same thing, and the 'You're either with us or against us' crap coming out of GWB's mouth is all the proof we need. Borders change in times of war, too. Pundits all over my country are moaning that we will probably be able to trace the end of our existence as a sovereign nation to the 11th of September 2001, as Ottawa seems to be increasingly buckling under pressure to create a North American perimeter and bring our policies more in line with the demands of American national security, effectively eliminating much of the Canadian difference. Strangely, our gun-control laws seem to be part of this change that may or may not happen.

Wars do that. Borders change a lot. We're just used to it happening in Europe, I guess.

As for clean-running cars, the recent Ballard/Ford/DaimlerChrysler deal pretty well shows that we're almost there, but people are still busily snapping up urban assault vehicles and spewing as much crap into the air as they can before we all switch to fuel cells.

Money still talks, the poor are still getting poorer while simultaneously representing an increasing percentage of North America. Food is plentiful but water is scarce. Much of the world is still tearing itself appart in senseless conflicts based on race or creed. Entire species still disappear every single day, forests are still being cut to shreds in the name of profit. Lakes are still turning into mass graves because of dumping.

The rain still stings when it gets into my eyes.

I guess simply rolling over the calendar isn't enough to bring about the changes we need in order to survive. we might actually have to *do* something.
