Hm. I'd say that the bankruptcy of Swissair, the impending failure of Sabena (the Belgian airline), the very possible closing of Air Canada, and the extensive layoffs at British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Alitalia, and several large US airlines in the wake of the events of 11 September clearly show us that, whereas the West is good at taking down an enemy's infrastructure to get what it wants, it is rediculously unpractised at protecting the infrastructure here in previously untouchable America.

We were hit in the place the Western world cares the most: The lifestyle. I guess it kind of makes sense, really. The only way to successfully take down America is by hitting it in the wallet: Wall street and Bay street, the banks, Big Business.

Fear of flying is bringing down an industry that was already in trouble, but one that speaks directly to our freedom to go at will to wherever we want. The rich tourist will most probably have to be *way* richer to irritate the natives after the fallout from this is over. The only question is how many airlines will be left after the dust settles? Will air travel be yet another US-run industry? I hope not, though I totally disagree with the cash bailout that Air Canada is getting from the Government of Canada. Let it fail, make it re-structure. Stop bailing out failing companies, fer chrissakes. nothing is going to make a company do the introspective stuff if they get bailed out everytime there's financial trouble.

Yeowtch! Speaking of infrastructure failure, Nortel's now up to 50,000 layoffs this year, and is still looking at a third-quarter loss of (give or take) US$3.6 billion, because the damned industry is so cash-strapped right now.

Yeah, okay, but I can't even picture than much money in my head. How does one imagine *billions* of dollars without boggling? How does one not look at a loss like that without wondering what they would do if they had that much money to spend? And for gossakes, how does one find 50,000 new holes for those people to fill?

**********

Well, at least theres *something* good going on these days. Way to go, Ballard. Maybe someday soon, owning a car *won't* be an implicit affront to the environment.
