Democracy for sale

Fuck. We lost. We lost the goddamn injunction against the municipal mergers. an order handed down from an ivory tower, set to be implemented despite a %99 vote against it is *not* unconstitutional. The superior court has *got* to be in the government's pocket. The government hasn't even decided what they want to *call* the South Shore mega city yet, and we're all supposed to be forced into these damned things in November.

I don't believe we lost.

There's a real degeneration of democracy going on in North America. In the States, the only difference between Democrat and Republican lies in whether you want your abuses to be blatant or subtle. In Canada, we have a system whereby the Prime Minister has *no* checks and balances to keep him from becoming a megalomaniacal dictator, and provincial governments that need not listen to their voting citizens.

And, in the case of Qubec, this rediculous merger crap will wipe out the Stay Canadian legislation passed by so many of those soon-to-merge municipalities for the eventuality of a Yes vote in the next referendum neverendum, let alone the removal of their bi-lingual status...

I am very depressed right now. Watching your government openly toss democracy to the winds does that.

I know that democracy is rule by the lowest common denominator. I know it rarely works out all that well, it's still the system we got, and it should be adhered to, at least until we come up with something better.
