A new poem

So, I'm going to see an all-female funk/sould band at the unfortunately-named Charlie's American Pub just down the street from O'Donnell's. Going with Sister's Ex and one or two other people who I hope I can get along with. I say that because I put up admirably with J's Girlfriend at McKibbon's this afternoon. I am a fricking hero.

They were celebrating the passing of their last exam. They were already in the cups when J and I arrived. At one point, J jokingly said 'where are we eating bee-atch' to one of the girls, which made for a certain hilarity, but of course the shrew had to lean in and say 'We English lit graduates don't say stuff like that. He (pointing at me. POINTING!!!!) does.'

My reply was short, and I believe, elegant: 'You're right, but it seems that English Lit's got the market cornered on pointing.'

Unfortunately, I said it under my breath. I am nice to her for J's benefit. Purely.

Anyway, the Gutter Dog aside, it was a nice time. I spent most of it talking to Bananna, of course (and eyeing the woman in the purple shirt at the next table, but that's neither here nor there), while all around us, the others kept talking about which questions they answered and who they'd specialised in like they couldn't stand to let go of their only purpose. I wanted to say, 'Academes! Life is cruising by without you, remove the book from around your eyes and grab at something!' Poor J hates getting trapped there, but she *is* his girlfriend...

I read. A lot. I refuse, however, to let literature rule my life. There is too much else out there that is beautiful.

I wrote a new poem to-day. I hope it doesn't stink.
