Wow, a c'est chouette, quoi? Could it be that we may not, in the end, destroy our planet? I don't think so, but there's always hope, and it comes from the smaller guys. The ones with less to lose from a change to alternative fuel sources or solar power. I still don't see enough intelligence going to to feel any real relief yet, but there's a faint glimmer of hope resting somewhere, waiting to expand into something more. ********** Mysteria will be happy to know that I finally got off me arse and uploaded my benner. MAY DAY DEBATE ON INVESTOR STATE CLAUSE
OTTAWA - New Democrat Members of Parliament marked May Day with an attack in
the House of Commons on Chapter 11 of NAFTA, the so called "investor-state"
clause that allows foreign investors to bring claims against governments if
the profit making potential of their ventures are hurt by government
decisions.
A similar provision is expected to find its way into the Free Trade Areas of
the Americas agreement now being negotiated behind closed doors by
government bureaucrats and representatives of transnational corporations.
"Following the Quebec Summit," NDP Leader Alexa McDonough, sponsor of the
Opposition Day motion, said, "the Prime Minister was calling Chapter 11 of
NAFTA a good clause. 'It is one that works reasonably well', said the Prime
Minister. His Trade Minister has been faithfully parroting the line ever
since.''
She told the House: "To concerned people throughout America, however,
Chapter 11 is not a good thing. It is the Trojan horse of so-called free
trade in the style of big business. Chapter 11 is the clause that ends the
debate over whether globalization threatens the sovereignty of countries."
NDP trade critic Svend Robinson said: "It is no coincidence that today is
May Day, a day when we pay tribute to and honor the contribution of working
men and women throughout the hemisphere and throughout the world. It is just
a couple of days after the Day of Mourning for workers who were killed and
injured on the job. More and more we have witnessed under NAFTA, under this
regulation of growing corporate power, deregulation and privatization, an
erosion in the rights of workers."
He recalled attending the People Summit held in Quebec City prior to the
Summit of the Americas. " One of the most powerful and moving forums was the forum of women," he said. "It talked about the impact of the existing trade
deals on women. I will never forget hearing a speech by a Mexican woman who
worked in the maquiladoras. She spoke of the dramatically increased level
of violence directed against women and yes, also violence at the workplace.
That is what is being entrenched in this new FTAA."
