election?

A word to my American readers. ELECT A FREAKIN' PRESIDENT, ALREADY! Yeesh! Just to-day, The prime minister of Canada announced elections, 3.5 years into the Liberals' five-year mandate. What will doubtlessly follow the announcement is a five-week whirlwind of public relations hustling by the leaders and lackeys of all five federal parties (promised to be ugly this year), and a day of lackadaisical votin on the part of a disenfranchised and apathetic public.

In contrast, a US presidential election encompases about twelve years of televised debates, tours, bullshit and million-dollar smiles (behind which are gazillion-dollar smear campaigns, favour-solicitation and general vote buying). And at the end of it, you have voted in a president without the benefit of a ruling party. THAT takes another election at a different time. It seems pretty rediculous to me.

Oh, and to all of you who think you're actually directly voting in a president, go look up the term 'electoral college.'

Anyway, it seems that we're off down the road to a new federal election. Ugh... It'll be either Chretien again or Day. Chretien's a megalomaniac and Day's a bible-thumping right winger who seems to have cut his teeth while watching reagan and the family-values circus down south.

Ugh.I guess I'll be the only NDP vote in Queebec again...
